Canal & River Trust Living Waterways Awards

Back in March 2017 the Canal & River Trust invited those involved with the UK’s inland waterways to apply to be considered for their Canal & River Trust Living Waterways Awards 2017.

The Awards recognise the passion and dedication of volunteers who work together to create a destination experience on the canals, engaging communities and enriching peoples’ lives. There were 7 categories in all and The Audlem Lass team of volunteers, who run and support The Audlem Lass Boat Service, based at Overwater Marina, creating the waterways link with the village of Audlem, felt they qualified to be considered within the Recreation & Tourism category.

Our entry was accepted and the process began, visits took place by independent assessors across the Country and we learned that The Audlem Lass was to be a Finalist. Our Team of Volunteers was invited to attend a Gala Dinner held on Wednesday evening 27th September at MacDonald Burlington Hotel, Birmingham, when the Winners of ‘Oscars of the Waterways’ in each category would be announced and presentations made.

A party of eight of our volunteers attended, some of whom have been involved with The Audlem Lass Boat Service since its inception in 2011 The compare for the Evening was Ian McMillan, English poet, journalist, playwright and broadcaster, known as the Bard of Barnsley. The evening was a great success and The Audlem Lass Boat Service was delighted to be announced as ‘Runner Up’ in their category, quite an achievement as there was some really serious competition.
